Adult Dependent Relative Visa explained

The adult dependent relative (ADR) pathway offers eligible individuals the chance to reside in the UK with a close family member on a long-term or even permanent basis. However, ADR visas are typically granted only in specific, limited circumstances.

The ADR route is designed to allow those needing long-term care to live with a relative in the UK. Applicants must demonstrate that, due to their age, illness, or disability, they require a level of long-term personal care that can only be adequately provided in the UK by their sponsor.

This visa is part of the Spouse and Family visas in the UK.

How to apply for a UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa

Applicants who meet the strict requirements for entry clearance as an adult dependent relative of a British citizen or a settled person in the UK will be granted indefinite leave to enter and, hence, be allowed to stay in the UK without any time limit.

Applicants whose sponsor is not yet settled or a British citizen but has limited leave to remain under an eligible category are granted limited leave to the exact date their sponsor's limited leave expires. This will be subject to a condition of no access to public funds. The ADR visa holder can apply accordingly once the sponsor applies for indefinite leave.

This route must be applied for from overseas as switching to this route is not allowed from within the UK. Once the applicant is granted leave, an ADR visa holder with limited leave can apply for indefinite leave to remain.

The restrictive ADR rules are intended to reduce the burden on UK taxpayers by denying access to NHS and local authority social care services, except for those whose long-term care needs can be met in their home country. However, the rules also ensure that those whose needs can only be met by a UK-based relative receive immediate settled status, granting full access to NHS and local authority services. This route avoids discrepancies in the sponsor's financial position and also clarifies long-term residence in the UK.

Cost of the UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa

If you apply from outside the UK, the application fee is £3,250, and if you're applying from within the UK, the fee is £1,258.

You must also pay for the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your application. For an Adult Dependent Relative visa, which would usually be granted for 5 years, the overall cost for IHS would be £5,175, payable in advance at £1,035 per year.

Other costs may also include the biometric appointment of £19.20.

This is usually one of the most expensive applications made for entry into the UK. However, where successful, applicants will be granted indefinite leave to enter and are allowed to live indefinitely in the UK with their families. As such, given the stern requirements coupled with the high costs of the application, it will be best that one makes sure they meet the eligibility criteria before making such a huge financial investment in making such an application.
