A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a document showing the immigration status of a person and his entitlement to reside in the UK issued by the UK Home Office. This residence permit allows immigrants to prove their residence in the UK and the terms on which it is permitted.

The UK government is phasing out the physical format of BRPs to give way to a digital immigration system. BRPs are replaced by eVisas, which are online records of immigration status. Many current BRPs are being issued with an end date of December 31, 2024, even for those with longer leave to remain or indefinite leave.

BRP cards will no longer be issued, and from 1 January 2025, holders will be able to prove their immigration status online.

How to obtain a BRP or eVisa

As of January 2025, the UK is transitioning from physical BRPs to eVisas. To get an eVisa you should:

1. Create a UKVI account for digital status
2. Keep your current BRP until the transition is complete
3. Use online services to prove the right to work and rent

Cost of the BRP or eVisa

The cost of a new BRP card used to be £56. Currently, there is no price to pay for the eVisa.
