Reviews
I recently used JMR Solicitors and the experience was a very good one; I would highly recommend this firm for legal work. The work carried out for me by them was quick, professional and the quality was excellent. I will certainly go back to JMR if I need any legal work in the future.
Got in contact with JMR solicitors for the sale of my property after them being recommended to me by a good friend of mine. And I am glad to say that I had listened to their recommendation the sale itself went so smoothly they took care of everything and had kept up great communication with me through the process. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a solicitor to get in contact with JMR
Completely Untrustworthy and Unprofessional - Avoid This Firm My wife and I had an awful experience with this firm. What was supposed to be a straightforward café contract turned into a six-month nightmare, costing us more than three times the original estimate. The firm constantly delayed the process, and we had to chase them for updates. We were charged over £1,200 just for phone calls and emails, including calls we made to ask about the progress of our case. They recommended that we sign an hourly-rate contract, suggesting that it would likely take only a few hours to complete the work. While most solicitors offer fixed prices, they claimed this would save us money. Unfortunately, once you sign an hourly-rate contract, it becomes a never-ending ordeal. They will find ways to extend the process and bill you for every moment. Despite acknowledging a billing error in one of the invoices, the mistake was never corrected in the next one. When our deposit ran out, the firm demanded an additional £2,400, threatening to stop working on our case unless we paid immediately. The lack of professionalism and transparency was shocking. We’ve also been waiting for over a month for their internal complaints process, with no updates. It’s been extremely frustrating and unprofessional. If you encounter similar issues, you have the right to escalate the matter to the Legal Ombudsman after 8 weeks if the firm doesn’t resolve your complaint. You can also take your concerns to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) if you suspect misconduct. I strongly advise you to avoid this firm at all costs. They are unprofessional, unreliable, and more focused on inflating fees than providing honest service.
If I could give 0 stars, I would! Avoid JMR Solicitors at all costs! Due to financial constraints, I searched for a more affordable solicitor and found JMR Solicitors. I paid for a 30-minute consultation on April 15th to review a straightforward handover contract for my café. The solicitor hinted that the cost would be around £800-£1,000 + VAT and that it would take 4-6 hours of work, likely completed within 2-3 weeks. He gave the impression that it would be quick and not expensive. However, the experience was far from what was promised. The final cost ballooned to over £3,000—triple the estimate—and dragged on for six months. I felt completely deceived. They charged over £1,000 for phone calls and emails, including every communication I made to check progress. If I didn’t chase them, I wouldn’t get updates. My £1,800 deposit was quickly consumed by these communication fees, and I wasn’t informed until it was exhausted. Then, I was told I owed £400 and had to pay another £2,400 to continue. A finance team member rudely threatened to stop work if I didn’t pay. JMR also delayed my case by claiming they hadn’t received the seller’s solicitor’s emails, causing two extra weeks of delay. After finally admitting it was due to their own IT issues, they didn’t take responsibility and kept stalling. We had to chase the solicitor again to ask why the case wasn’t closed, only to hear excuses about a "basic contract" that his supervisor didn’t approve—information we only learned by chasing them. Throughout this nightmare, I received three separate invoices, and I had issues with every single one of them. The first invoice was particularly frustrating. They included a charge for “one hour of personal attendance for taking initial instructions,” but I had only a 30-minute consultation, which had already been invoiced and paid for separately. After I raised this issue, JMR acknowledged the mistake and promised to amend the bill. Despite this, when I received the third invoice, the same error was still there. They charged me again for the extra hour, which had already been corrected. This made me question their billing practices—either they don’t genuinely charge by the hour or they are incredibly careless with their accounting. How else could they justify charging for an additional hour of consultation that never took place? This demonstrated a lack of professionalism and a tendency to overcharge clients. Additionally, I requested evidence of the emails they claimed to have sent, which was never provided. I manually counted the emails, and the number didn’t match the charges on my invoice. For example, they charged £17.70 per email, and even a discrepancy of 10 emails would mean an extra £177. Despite repeatedly asking for clarification, they never provided any proof or explanation. My internal complaint, submitted weeks ago, has been completely ignored. This is a dishonest firm that overcharges and drags out the process for as long as possible to maximise their hourly fees. The fact that they charged me for their own IT issues and internal mistakes is absurd. Even after the contract was finally signed on September 9th, as of today, October 5th, I am still waiting for my deposit to be refunded. Since September 6th, I have tried to raise an internal complaint, but received no response. Their handling of my case was completely unprofessional. I urge anyone considering JMR Solicitors to stay away!
Update- 1 star (would be zero if possible), Monday 1st July Since my last update there has been zero progress towards the finalisation of my house purchase. My formal complaint has been acknowledged via telephone, yet nothing has been done to address my concerns. I am now intending to take this case to the legal ombudsman as I am extremely worried that JMR's incompetency and failure to progress/complete the transaction will result in the purchase falling through. I strongly advise anyone who is looking for conveyancing services to stay well away from this firm. ___________________________ Update - 1 star, Friday 24th May After the promising reaction to my initial review, it seems as though my hope and trust were misplaced with JMR. At present, the sellers solicitors returned their responses to contract enquiries on the 10th May - I have not received any updates or responses from JMR since this (apart from being notified that the person handling my case has changed -this will be the second time such changes have been made). I have now issued a formal complaint with the firm, updates to follow. _______________ Update - 3 stars, Monday 22nd April After posting my initial review I was contacted very promptly by the Office Manager, who was very apologetic, proactive, and professional regarding my experience to date. I appreciated their reassurance and efforts in reassigning my case to another employee so that I might be updated more urgently. As promised over the phone, I received an email update in the agreed timeline, as well as copies of my contract pack and search documentation. This was very reassuring and consequently rebuilt my confidence and trust in JMR. I will update this review with a final, overall rating and feedback upon completion. ‐--------------------------- Original review - 1 star, Thursday 18th April. I am currently in the process of purchasing a house and thus far, my experience with JMR has been extremely disappointing. Despite my efforts to reach out for updates and assistance, there has been little to no response from them. This lack of communication has left me feeling extremely anxious and unsure about the progress of my purchase. It's very frustrating and upsetting to be left in the dark during such an important transaction. As it currently stands, I have paid for a service which I have recieved no evidence of being carried out (they were assigned in late January, it is now mid-April). I had really hoped for better service, professionalism, and clearer communication throughout the process, and I hope the company endeavors to improve this going forward. As such, I would caution others to consider their lack of responsiveness and communication before choosing this firm for their conveyancing needs.
